Do you have an innovative product or service? There is funding you can apply for. Vinnova awards up to SEK 500,000 per startup, and Almi offers innovation loans for early-stage projects. But competition is fierce, only 30% of applications are approved. Here we go through what is available, what is required and how to improve your chances.
Vinnova: Sweden's innovation agency
Vinnova finances research and innovation projects that can benefit society. They run ongoing calls with different focus areas, from AI and deep tech to sustainability and the public sector.
The most relevant programme for smaller companies is Innovativa Startups (Innovative Startups).
Innovativa Startups: up to SEK 500,000
The programme is aimed at young companies with innovative ideas and international potential.
Requirements:
- Swedish limited company, no more than 10 years old.
- No more than 10 employees.
- Turnover or balance sheet total no more than SEK 10M.
- The founders control the company and drive its development.
- The company must not be listed on a stock exchange or have distributed profits.
What you can apply for:
- Staff and salary costs.
- Equipment and premises.
- Consultancy services (normally no more than 20% of the budget).
- Patents and licences.
- Materials, travel and direct project costs.
The grant covers up to 100% of the project costs, and the project period is no more than 9 months. Calls usually open in the spring with decisions in the autumn.
How Vinnova assesses your application
All applications are reviewed by external experts against three criteria:
- Potential. How innovative is the solution? What benefit does it create for society? Is there international market potential?
- Team. Do you have the right skills? Relevant networks? Control over the company?
- Feasibility. Is the budget realistic? Is the plan credible? Do you explain why you need this particular funding?
Incomplete applications are rejected immediately. The rest are assessed competitively. On average, 30% of all applications are approved. The decision cannot be appealed, but you can apply again at the next opportunity.
Common reasons for rejection
- Weak level of innovation. The solution does not differ enough from what already exists.
- Unclear benefit to society. Vinnova wants to see concrete impact, not just a profitable business idea.
- Unrealistic budget. Costs that cannot be justified or that do not match the project plan.
- Lack of international potential. The programme is aimed at companies with global ambition.
- Incomplete application. Missing attachments or fields that have not been filled in correctly are rejected before assessment.
Almi Innovationslan (innovation loan): for early-stage projects
Do you have an innovation project that is not ready for Vinnova funding? Almi offers innovation loans for early stages.
- Amount: From SEK 50,000, usually up to SEK 300,000.
- Coverage: Up to 50% of the total funding need.
- Term: No more than 96 months (8 years).
- Use: Product development, patent protection, market research, prototypes.
For amounts up to SEK 300,000, it is enough to co-finance with your own time spent (valued at SEK 250 per hour). Above that, external capital is required.
The innovation loan can be combined with a Vinnova grant. For example, you can use the Almi loan for the parts that Vinnova does not cover.
Regional innovation support
In addition to Vinnova and Almi, there is regional support via the county administrative boards and the regions. Tillvaxtverket coordinates the regional business support schemes, but it is your region that decides on and pays out the support.
- Consultancy checks (konsultcheckar) - grants for bringing in external expertise for development projects.
- Innovation checks (innovationscheckar) - smaller grants for testing or validating an idea.
- Incubators and accelerators - programmes that offer advice, office space and networks, often linked to Vinnova funding.
Contact your region's Almi office or county administrative board to see which programmes are open right now. What is on offer varies and changes continuously.
How to improve your chances
- Read the call carefully. Every call has specific requirements and criteria. Tailor your application to these, not to a generic template.
- Show benefit to society in concrete terms. Vinnova does not just want to know that your product is good. They want to know what difference it makes.
- Budget realistically. Exaggerated or vague costs reduce credibility. Justify every item.
- Seek feedback before you submit. Talk to someone who has received a Vinnova grant before. Many incubators help with the application process.
- Apply again if you are rejected. 70% get a no. That does not mean your idea is bad. Improve the application and apply in the next round.
Summary
Innovation support in Sweden comes in several forms. Vinnova offers grants of up to SEK 500,000 for startups with innovative ideas. Almi has innovation loans for early-stage projects. Regional support can complement them. Competition is fierce, but with a well-prepared application that clearly demonstrates innovation, benefit to society and international potential, you improve your chances.
